Lyrics Analysis

Lyrics Analysis from leannepratt

Learning comment - This task was really helpful for giving me an idea for my narrative. This is due to the fact that I can start to develop my own ideas about what they mean and how it can influence the  narrative or how I can represent different things in different ways.

Song Permission

Song And Lyrics

Well, Well, Well - Duffy

[Intro]
Well well well
Well well well
Well well well
Well well well

[Verse 1]
Highly suspicious, where was i last night
Seek and you shall find
And it goes in my mind
You make me draw the line
I didn't commit any crime
[Pre-Hook]
I'm not guilty of what you're saying and i do
I'm not guilty of what you're saying and i do

[Hook]
Well well well

Why you giving me the third degree?
Why you giving me the third degree?

When i'm not guilty
Of what you're saying i do
I'm not guilty
Of what you're saying i do

[Verse 2]
I'm not that cagey
But i don't need to explain
There's nothing to blame
You'll only drive me away
There's so many questions every day
You make me go insane

[Pre-Hook]

[Hook]

[Bridge]
Well well well
Well well well
Well well well

[Outro]
I'm not guilty of what you're saying i do
You know
I'm not guilty of what you're saying i do

Why you giving me the third degree
Why you giving me the third degree
Why you giving me the third degree
Why you giving me the third degree

Well well well

Learning comment - I think that this video could work really well for a music video. I like how its really short and upbeat, meaning it will be really easy to keep audiences entertained and interested in what is going on. I also think that it will be easier to create a narrative to this as the lyrics tell a story of how someone is always getting accused of doing something she hasn't done, in this case cheating. As the lyrics are quite repetitive it means it will be easier for my actor/musician to learn, and perform well.

Thinking Of A Concept/Song

Learning comment - After doing my research about music videos, digipaks and digipak adverts, I think the best genre of music to do is pop.  This is because the genre is so vast and that gives me a wider variety to choose from. However i really liked the style in which indie pop videos are presented.
I really like Ellie Goulding as a musician as her songs are often fun and upbeat, despite the softer tones to her voice.  however after listening to her songs i decided that they would very hard to create a decent music video for, due to the popularity and typical pop style.
Paloma Faith is also an artist i really like, due to her individuality and old fashioned style. however he song are often very big and powerful as seen in the Ellie Goulding video, meaning that i want to take the other elements and add them to an artist who isn't as well known today.
This is how I found Duffy's Well, Well, Well. She was an musician that was very popular in the late 2000's. she has a very unique vocal style and it often seems very classic. I decided that i wanted to maintain this classic image in the video and digipaks for my artist, hoping that it will provide for an interesting and different take on the pop genre.

Music Video Analysis

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

Pop – Pop music is probably the biggest genre of music in the industry. Despite being a typically male dominated industry there are many successful female artists, such as Adel, BeyoncĂ© and Taylor Swift, who have also had a major influence over the industry. Their videos are typically very lively and full of bright colours. This is to encourage the audience to have fun and become more care free when watching and listening to then song. They also often use narratives that reflect the lyrics of the song. However some artists decide that they don’t want to use them and create performance based video, but in a unique and staged setting. Males and females are presented differently in pop videos. This is due to the target audience and fan base that they want to reach out to. For example despite being an inspiring and talented musician, BeyoncĂ© is sometimes presented in a sexualised manor that appeals to a male audience. They are often dressed in revealing clothes, linking to the male gaze theory (shaker). It suggests that men are the main viewer of such texts and that’s why they are addressed to them. Because of this, males don't often face the same pressure as female artists, meaning that they can get away with less sexualised videos and often don't cover the same content as other female artists.

Example - Taylor Swift - Shake It Off

In this video I don't think it particularly conforms to the stereotypes typically found in the genre. This is because the video is quite empowering for women, suggesting that they can get over anything if they just “shake it off”. Taylor is also not presented in a typically sexualised manor as other female artists and I think that this is becoming more common, as seen in other modern artists such as Adel who relies solely on her voice rather than her looks to carry her career forward.  She doesn’t seem as lady like and formal, as seen in her other videos like blank space, but that is due to the image that was needed for this song in particular. . However this is a very typical looking pop video as it is full of bright colours and everyone seems to be having a fun time in the video. They have also decided to make it a performance based video, but the narrative is reflected in the setting and dancing that takes place.

Rock - Despite this genre being considered outdated, it still has a major influence on musicians and their own music. In recent years more and more artists, such as U2, Green Day and The Artic Monkeys, seem to be taking inspiration from the older bands and re-establishing it in the music industry. Because of this they have started to compete for the same fan base as pop music, and also appearing more and more in the charts. This genre typically features songs by bands (consisting of a lead guitar, bass guitar, drums and a lead singer). In these music videos the entire band is featured, contrasting from pop videos where it mainly focuses on the lead singer. This is because they appreciate that it takes more than just lyric and a strong voice to carry the song to an audience, making a connection with the music. This genre is mainly male dominated, allowing the videos to be presented towards a male audience, but not in the same manner as found in pop videos. The colours also differ from your typical pop music videos, incorporating black into the music video, seeming more masculine. This is also shown through their clothing, often wearing dark unbranded clothes. This allows them to seem more ordinary, as anyone can wear clothes like this.

Analysis of Student Videos

This is an A grade video. This is due to the excellent use of narrative compared to some others I have seen. They have kept is simple, but with enough of an entertainment and creative value to keep the viewer interested. I also think that the clothing and locations used worked really well for the narrative and the genre of music. They also showed great technical skills when editing and filming the music video. This was shown through the smooth transitions and the filters that were used on the footage. It gave the video a sense of continuity, which may not have been achieved otherwise. They have decided to use a wide range of shots, from wide to close up and still shots and moving shots.

However the song was originally sung by a band and there isn't any band shown in the music video, only a solo artist. I think that it would have been nice to see a band as well as just the singer.

This is a C/D due a lack of control over the camera and dull narrative. It seemed as though there was some skill involving the make-up and props element however it didn't work as it showed up on the camera, causing the quality of the video to be lowered. There was also no evidence of lip syncing the video and only seemed to focus on the narrative.
The location is also something that i don't really think goes with the genre. Normally in music videos the location is not just an ordinary town. I believe this reflects badly on the video as it shows little creative value. The clothing is also not appropriate for the pop genre.
Along with all of this it took a very long time to get into the actual music video. I think that they could have spent less time on the beginning section.

However they did use a wide variety of camera angles, demonstrating some skill involving the camera. Despite the narrative not really linking with the genre, the variety of locations and clothing did suit the narrative.

I think this is a B/A, due to the relevance to the genre and creative aspects of the video. I really like the wide range of eating techniques that are used to create a fun and professional looking video. It is clear that a lot of time an effort has been put into the creation of the video.
They have good control over the camera and spent a lot of time thinking about forming. The Mise En Scene is also really clearly though out as they have deliberately used the bright colours to highlight the entertaining and fun elements of the song.

However there isn't much of a narrative element to the video, but that is possibly due to the genre. Despite the lack of narrative the video is still entertaining and fun to watch, which is the most important part.

Branding Research

http://leannepratt16.wixsite.com/brandingresearch

Learning comment - I really enjoyed this task as I was able to look at two different artists and see how their branding affects their careers. this allowed me to see what I can use when developing my own music artist. i have learnt that a key part of today’s branding is social media and the way in which celebrities present themselves is key. this allows them to connect with their fans directly and display their brand as well. logos and fashion are also a key way of doing this ad often appear on their social media.

Inspiration

Learning comment - As I was doing research for my own music video I came across a few music videos that I found inspirational. This was through their simplicity and artistic style to create a new and captivating style for music videos than in the past.
