Music Video Analysis

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

Pop – Pop music is probably the biggest genre of music in the industry. Despite being a typically male dominated industry there are many successful female artists, such as Adel, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift, who have also had a major influence over the industry. Their videos are typically very lively and full of bright colours. This is to encourage the audience to have fun and become more care free when watching and listening to then song. They also often use narratives that reflect the lyrics of the song. However some artists decide that they don’t want to use them and create performance based video, but in a unique and staged setting. Males and females are presented differently in pop videos. This is due to the target audience and fan base that they want to reach out to. For example despite being an inspiring and talented musician, Beyoncé is sometimes presented in a sexualised manor that appeals to a male audience. They are often dressed in revealing clothes, linking to the male gaze theory (shaker). It suggests that men are the main viewer of such texts and that’s why they are addressed to them. Because of this, males don't often face the same pressure as female artists, meaning that they can get away with less sexualised videos and often don't cover the same content as other female artists.

Example - Taylor Swift - Shake It Off

In this video I don't think it particularly conforms to the stereotypes typically found in the genre. This is because the video is quite empowering for women, suggesting that they can get over anything if they just “shake it off”. Taylor is also not presented in a typically sexualised manor as other female artists and I think that this is becoming more common, as seen in other modern artists such as Adel who relies solely on her voice rather than her looks to carry her career forward.  She doesn’t seem as lady like and formal, as seen in her other videos like blank space, but that is due to the image that was needed for this song in particular. . However this is a very typical looking pop video as it is full of bright colours and everyone seems to be having a fun time in the video. They have also decided to make it a performance based video, but the narrative is reflected in the setting and dancing that takes place.

Rock - Despite this genre being considered outdated, it still has a major influence on musicians and their own music. In recent years more and more artists, such as U2, Green Day and The Artic Monkeys, seem to be taking inspiration from the older bands and re-establishing it in the music industry. Because of this they have started to compete for the same fan base as pop music, and also appearing more and more in the charts. This genre typically features songs by bands (consisting of a lead guitar, bass guitar, drums and a lead singer). In these music videos the entire band is featured, contrasting from pop videos where it mainly focuses on the lead singer. This is because they appreciate that it takes more than just lyric and a strong voice to carry the song to an audience, making a connection with the music. This genre is mainly male dominated, allowing the videos to be presented towards a male audience, but not in the same manner as found in pop videos. The colours also differ from your typical pop music videos, incorporating black into the music video, seeming more masculine. This is also shown through their clothing, often wearing dark unbranded clothes. This allows them to seem more ordinary, as anyone can wear clothes like this.
